30/30 list: a look back

November 26th, 2010

Well friends, today I turn 30. Whoa! To celebrate, Aaron and I are spending a week in Paris eating, wandering and eating some more. While I didn’t complete all my 30/30 tasks by my birthday, I still have hopes of completing them! I had so much fun crossing things off and challenging myself. I highly recommend it.

I also wanted to take a minute to say thank you to you. Having this blog and hearing from my readers has truly been a highlight of my 20′s. Ten years ago I would have never imagined what my life is now. I mean, I made mayonaise for goodness sake, back then I could hardly even make a box of macaroni and cheese! Now I have a constant urge to try new things, to make new things and to share them with you. So thank you for coming along on my journey. I can’t wait to see what my 30′s bring.

30/30 list: asymmetric haircut

September 13th, 2010

I have to admit, of all the things on my 30/30 list, the asymmetric haircut made me the most nervous. Well, maybe that and driving in Manhattan (which I still haven’t done). The whole idea came about a year or so ago when my hair stylist suggested it might be a good look for me. All I could think of was my mom’s asymmetric cut back in the eighties, the one that was immortalized on her driver’s license for years after and always made us laugh. So I wasn’t exactly raring to go.

I don’t think of myself as the daring type, especially when it involves something I have to look at every day. But that’s exactly why the asymmetric haircut made it on my list. I want to be daring, or at least a little surprising. So when I went in for a haircut after a ridiculously long time without one, I asked for it.

Guess what? I love it.

30/30: picnic in central park

August 16th, 2010

As the summer is coming to a close, I’ve been trying to check off more of my 30/30 items. This weekend I checked off a pretty dreamy one, a picnic in central park.

The city’s been closing down a few avenues to traffic on Sundays in August, which means bikes and pedestrians have free rein of the streets. Riding my bike in traffic is not one of my strong suites, so I jumped at the chance ride over the Brooklyn Bridge and all the way to central park car-free. Once we got to the park we spread out our blanket and snacked on fruit, cheese and bread from the market. As if that’s not cool enough, we decided to take advantage of the lovely day and rowed a boat in the pond. It was like taking a vacation in my own city… I love it!

I’m over half way there… fingers crossed I can accomplish all of my goals before the big day! Look for a market week round up in the next day or two.

30/30 list perfect margarita

August 6th, 2010

Woohoo! It’s that time of week again and I am so ready! Next week is market week which should be a blast. Thanks to everyone who’s shown interest! Remember to post photos to our flickr page.

Before we start market week, I have something to celebrate… I have perfected my margarita, which was one of my to-dos on my 30/30 list. I’ve posted a few margaritas before, but I have a dirty little secret to admit. Ok, it’s not super dirty so don’t get all excited, but up until now I’ve been using Triple Sec instead of Cointreau. You hard-core cocktail folks are probably cringing, but it was cheaper and I thought it was the same. My biggest revelation: it’s not the same. Cointreau has a much more flavorful citrus taste and really is a key component to a good margarita. After trying different proportions, I’ve concluded that the recipe below is my perfect margarita. It’s hard work, but someone’s got to do it.

Cheers! Have a great weekend!

Perfect Margarita

from Dale Degroff
1 1/2 oz 100% agave tequila
1 oz fresh squeezed lime juice
1/2 oz Cointreau
1/4 oz agave syrup
kosher salt
ice
lime wedge to garnish
1. Place a tablespoon or two of salt on a plate. Rub the lip of your glass with a lime and dip in the salt.

2. Add ice to glass and set aside.

3. Combine tequila, lime juice, agave, ice and Cointreau in a separate glass and give it a good shake. Pour over ice and say cheers!

30/30: dance club

May 17th, 2010

The first thing to be marked off my 30/30 list is the dance club. Oh yeah, we’re starting off with a bang. It was an excellent night out with some of my favorite lady friends but I have to say, my feet might be too wimpy for a dance club. I think I’m more the kick off the shoes and dance barefoot in the living room type.

Look out for a delicious barbecue recipe coming up tomorrow.

my 30/30 list

May 13th, 2010

Sooo, this year I turn the big 3-0. While some people really dread this birthday, I’m pretty excited about it. I feel like I’ve had a good run in my twenties, I’ve done a lot (graduated college, met and married my best friend, moved to nyc, started this blog…), met amazing people and generally had fun. Oh but wait, there are a few things I want to do before the big day arrives, so I decided to make a list of 30 things to do before I turn 30 (inspired by Nicole’s list). Some things are little, some things are big, but they’re all fun. Also, I’m not saying in any way, shape or form that these things can’t be done after 30, in fact I’m hoping some of them will continue well into my thirties (hello dance class and delicious margarita making).

I have 28 weeks to complete my list and I hope you’ll come along on the ride. I’ll be posting updates as I complete them and when November 26th rolls around, we’ll have a celebration. Oh, what would you put on your list?
