strawberry rumshake

Could there be a more perfect combination? A strawberry milkshake adultified (yes, I made that word up) by adding rum?! Ok, I can’t take all the credit here. I saw a recipe for something similar in the latest issue of Bon Appetit and was totally intrigued by the combination of not only a strawberry milkshake and rum, but a bit of white wine vinegar and black pepper too. Your ears perked up too, right? Well there’s no way I couldn’t try it, so I whipped up my own version, using theirs as a guide and I have to say, whoa—I’m in love.

The drink takes a little more time than my normal happy hour, but this isn’t for your normal happy hour, so there’s not whining on my end. I’ve tried it with and without the vinegar—I think my preference is without, but that being said I thought the addition of vinegar was really interesting. I loved the black pepper on top of the whipped cream though, it’s the perfect touch.

Now it’s got me thinking about all the other boozy milkshakes I’m going to make this summer! What do you think about blueberries, lemon sorbet and gin? Or peaches, vanilla ice cream and bourbon— a new take on peaches and cream? Oh the ideas are flowing, I can’t wait and neither should you!

Strawberry rumshake

makes 2 milkshakes | inspired by this Pink Lady recipe from Bon Appetit
1 cup strawberries, hulled and quartered
2 Tablespoons sugar
1 1/2 ounces dark rum
1/2 ounce white wine vinegar, optional
1/2 pint vanilla ice cream of 4 big scoops
1/4 cup whipped cream
freshly ground black pepper
1. In a small bowl, combine the strawberries and sugar. Let sit about 30 minutes, until the juices have absorbed the sugar.2. Pour the strawberry mixture into a blender. Add the rum and vinegar if using, then add the ice cream. Blend for about 15 seconds, until the mixture is smooth.

3. Divide the rumshake between two small glasses, top with the whipped cream and a twist of fresh black pepper. Enjoy!

    Oh, this looks so so good! We’re a (mostly) dairy free household so I could totally make this with coconut milk ice cream.
